Why thirty seconds is enough

Every site you open receives your IP address, and from that address it learns your operator and a rough location. Free IP tools simply show you the same thing. Run them with the VPN off and you will see Jio, Airtel, Vi or your broadband company, along with a city that is often wrong. Run them with the key connected and you should see Dubai or Singapore and a hosting company. If not, something is leaking, and the third check tells you what.

The three checks

What is my IP: the address, the operator and the claimed city. Searching show my IP gives the same number.
Who is my ISP: the company carrying your traffic. The question what is my ISP number has no real answer for customers. The name is all there is.
DNS leak test: whether your site lookups still go to your operator. Any page that lets you check DNS leak status will do.

Why the city is wrong

Indian operators route entire regions through hubs. A phone in Indore may appear in Mumbai, and one in Guwahati may appear in Kolkata. Lookup databases record the hub. So my IP location, my IP address and location, and whats my IP location address all return an estimate. Jio adds a further twist. It is IPv6 first, so a search for what is my IP address IPv4 can come back empty on a Jio SIM. None of this is a fault.

The routine

1VPN off: note the operator and the city. Any my IP address find page will do.
2Connect to a city with your Notchless key.
3Look again. The operator should be a hosting company, and the country should have changed.
4Run the DNS leak test. Your operator should not be in the list.

Reading trouble

✓The operator is unchanged: the client is not connected.
✓The address is new but your operator shows in DNS: switch on the client's DNS or IPv6 option.
✓A different suburb in the right country: databases are approximate.
✓Wi-Fi and mobile data give different results: they are different networks.
✓A site treats you as a robot: you share the server's address with others. Try the other near city.

Questions from the queue

What is my IP public address?

The address your operator assigned to your connection. It is what every site sees.

Can a site get my name from it?

No. Only your operator can link an address to a SIM, and only under a legal process.

Do I need to know my IP address for support?

Sometimes. A lookup page shows it, and no app is needed.

Are these tools free?

Yes. The basic facts cost nothing.

What should change with the VPN on?

The country, the operator name and the DNS servers.

What is my IP address location on Jio?

Usually a hub city such as Mumbai or Delhi, and not your own town.
